Roland Vivian Pitchforth, RA, RWS (1895 – 1982)

Born in Wakefield, he attended Leeds College of Art with Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Raymond Coxon between 1914-15 and again after military service during the First World War, between 1919-20.

He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, where he studied under Sir William Rothenstein, 1921-25. Shortly after leaving the RCA, one of his first teaching appointments in 1926 was at Camberwell School of Art. He was a teacher of the highest quality, and taught at several London art schools.

He exhibited widely, holding his first one-man show in 1928 at the London Artists Association, and became a member of the London Group the following year after exhibiting with them for many years. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1922 and was elected an associate in 1942, becoming a full member in 1953.

During the Second World War he was appointed an official War Artist with the Admiralty and travelled extensively around Ceylon and Burma. In the immediate post-war years, he took up residence in Durban, South Africa, and whilst there was instrumental in sending students to Camberwell.

He returned to England in 1947 and continued to teach until the mid-1960’s, spending the majority of his time at Camberwell & St Martin’s, where he taught life drawing. His work is represented in many private & public collections, including the Tate Gallery, Imperial War Museum and the V&A.
