Josiah John Sturgeon (1919-2000)

Practising architect, tutor and demonstrator, working in oils and watercolours. Specialises in working craft of all kinds, at sea and along the shoreline: his particular favourites are fishing boats and sailing barges.

Trained at School of Architecture in drawing, painting and visual arts, and studied under a number of eminent artists. Member of Wapping Group of Artists of which he is a Past-President.

Grew up within sight and sound of ships and shipping in a nautical family environment of tugs, sailing barges, ships, boatbuilding and pilotage.

Early years spent afloat, learning from professionals the skills of handling and navigating craft on the tideways and estuary of the once busy London River. Gained an intimate knowledge of a wide variety of craft, both coastal and ocean-going. Has experienced North and South Atlantic in winter and summer in peace and war.

Exhibited at the RI, RSMA, and other major London exhibitions. Elected RI in 1961.
