James Stroudley (1906 – 1985)

Painter, printmaker and teacher, he was born and lived in London. He studied at Clapham School of Art, 1923-27, then Royal College of Art, 1927-30, where his teachers included William Rothenstein, Allan Gwynne-Jones, A.K.Lawrence and Thomas Monnington. He assisted the latter two on decorations in the Bank of England.

He was awarded the first Abbey Major Scholarship, 1930-33, when he travelled and studied in Europe, primarily Italy. Thus his main influences were classic Italian painters, notably Giotto and Piero della Francesca. Although noted as a follower in that tradition, and a fine figurative draughtsman, he did complete paintings showing a Cubist influence, and richly coloured.

He taught at Clapham, Wimbledon and St Martin’s Schools of Art, the latter for more than 30 years. Students included Auerbach, Kossoff, and Tilson. He became a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools.

He showed at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of Artists, of which he became a member in 1934. He held one-man exhibitions at the Wilderstein, Appollinaire and Tooth Galleries in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He is represented  in the public collections of Bradford, Brighton, Rochdale and Coventry.
